our common ground

***Important Our Common Ground Update***

Since 2015, Our Common Ground has sought to provide hospitality and community with people living outside in Everett, WA. It began as a ministry of Our Common Table, and since that time has become the central mission of this church.

We had a hospitality space multiple days a week, we built friendships with people in our community, and we provided food and supplies to people who could use them. We did this work not only because it was needed in Everett, but because we truly believed that this is who were are called to be in the world.

But in early 2019, it became clear that, at our current level of fundraising, Our Common Ground would not be sustainable, at least in its present capacity. So, at the beginning of summer, we made the sad decision to shut down the hospitality space, and regroup to see what Our Common Ground might look like.

So, we are not sure at this point what OCG will become. Or what it will look like. But we do know that, with any resources that we have left, we want to continue our mission of hospitality and community in Everett.
Our Common Ground is a community of hospitality and collaboration that is open to all, as we journey together with our neighbors experiencing poverty, addiction, and mental (un)health

Community is the foundation of who we are and what we do. A group of people, walking side by side through this journey of life, navigating the ups and downs of the various paths that we are on. Some of us will stick around on this journey for a while, others for the day, but community is who we are. We hope this extends beyond our Hospitality Space and throughout Everett. Community is not merely an ideal for us; it is crucial to those experiencing poverty, addiction, and mental illness. In our society of dis-connect, it is hard enough to deal with the trauma of these experiences. It is almost impossible without a social network of people who care. Our goal is not to fix anyone, but to simply be present, walking alongside others, and asking how we might practice community where we are at.

We are a community that welcomes all. Whether you slept outside last night or inside, you are welcome here. Maybe you just need a cup of coffee on a cold morning at our Hospitality Center. Or maybe you are looking for a community to participate in every week. Either way, welcome. At Our Common Ground, hospitality is more that just welcoming others into our Hospitality Space. It is welcoming others in our lives. In our culture of individuality, this can sound like a radical concept, but we truly believe that in welcoming others into our space, into our community, and into our lives, we are making our neighborhood of North Everett a better place.

Though our mission is community and relationship, we hope to see people get into housing, find jobs, locate places of healing for mental illness and addiction, and find any other tangible resources they might need - because that is what community does. But we’re not a service provider. Rather, we collaborate, with each person bringing something to the table. This is the kind of community that we strive to be: working together - each bringing our skills and wisdom - to thrive as human beings.  We also hope to collaborate with other people, churches, and organizations to better build community and provide hospitality to friends and neighbors experiencing poverty, mental health, and addiction.
